Getting Started:

How to Mount a Horse:

First check that your girth is snug enough to prevent the saddle from slipping when you attempt to get on. Begin by standing on the left side of your horse as it’s customary to work from this side. Hold the reins in your left hand, just in front of the saddle, keeping them loose. Next, place your left foot in the stirrup with the ball of your foot on the stirrup. Use your left foot to step up into a standing position with your right leg hanging next to your left. Carefully swing your right leg over the horse’s rump without accidentally kicking them. Gently sit down in the saddle. Finally, put your right foot in the other stirrup, ensuring that the ball of your foot is centered on it.

How to Ride Your Horse:

Sit deeply and relaxed in the saddle, keeping the reins loosely to avoid pulling back on your horse’s mouth while signaling them to move forward. Give your horse a gentle squeeze, not a kick, with your lower legs to start walking.

Sit tall, maintain a straight forward head, and look between your horse’s ears instead of the ground. Avoid repeatedly squeezing with your legs once the horse is walking, keeping your legs long, still, and the weight firmly in your heels. Always listen to your guide’s instructions on how to steer with your reins and legs. Toes up and heels down.

How to turn your horse:

Your Horse works off of pressure so when you want to turn to the right you will move you hand to the right in the direction you want to go. This makes the left rein lay across the left side of your horses neck, which tells your horse to turn to the right. The same directions for the left turn just the opposite direction.

How to Stop your Horse:

To start, make sure you’re steady in the saddle by sinking your weight into the seat and firming up your legs. If needed, hold onto the horn or front of the saddle for extra support. Let your horse know you’d like to slow down by saying “Whoa” in a normal tone of voice, avoiding yelling since you’re close to their ears. Pull back gently on the reins like a rope until he slows down or stops and then release your pull back to a loose rein. Your horse is working off the pressure in his mouth to know when you want to stop or slow down.

If you are worried about your experience, the following tips will ensure your rides are safe and comfortable:

Wear the right clothes

Wearing proper clothes is essential, no matter what season you pick for horseback riding. Shorts and skirts are great for summer, but they are not ideal for rides on horseback. Save yourself from chafing by wearing jeans or horse-riding breeches. Dressing in layers is advisable in winter to keep yourself warm. It’s best to wear a lightweight outer layer, which you can put on or take off whenever you like especially when it’s sunny outside.
